About the Common Data Environment (CDE)

A common data environment (CDE) is the single source of information used to collect, manage and disseminate documentation, the graphical model and non-graphical data for the whole project team throughout the assets lifecycle.

By implementing a CDE, teams in the Architecture, Engineering, Construction and Owner/Operator (AECO) industry can improve coordination, reduce errors, and streamline workflows.

Autodesk Construction Cloud, with its powerful tools like Autodesk Docs, facilitates an effective CDE by ensuring all project data -drawings, models, documents, and communication – are accessible, current, and secure, fostering enhanced collaboration and project efficiency.

Common Data Environment Configuration & Administration

At Baker Baynes, we understand that a common data environment is a foundation for successful BIM project delivery. Successful ongoing administration, management, and quality controls for adherence to BIM protocols and guidelines can be time-consuming and the use of the Common Data Environment (CDE) forms a part of a bigger Building Information Modelling/Management (BIM) process. Because of this, we assist our clients and their project/s with CDE Configuration and administration.

Typical tasks included:

• Configuration and set up of Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC) Account, Project Template, Library items and Pilot Project/s.

• Ongoing management and maintenance of Autodesk Construction Cloud services, permissions, settings and workflows

• Monitoring the use of CDE and identified workflows against a BEP (BIM Execution Plan), and information guidelines

• Audit and reporting

• This Service is typically done on a quarterly retainer basis and requires a scoping session for details and cost to be defined.

Autodesk Construction Cloud – CDE User Guide

The Baker Baynes Autodesk Construction Cloud CDE User Guide is created with you and will outline the workflows and procedures tailored to your organisation or project. It details the features and functions necessary for various workflows, ensuring compliance with your unique company, project, and BIM guidelines. Key components include, but are not limited to:

• High-level folder structure
• Review and approval process
• Issue management
• Naming conventions and project standards
• Coordination and collaboration guidelines
• Quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) processes
• Change management

Understanding the technology alone does not guarantee effective implementation across different projects with varying workflows and standards. This user guide ensures that everyone involved in the project understands how to navigate your Common Data Environment (CDE), facilitating the onboarding and mobilization of new team members.

For optimal usage, this guide should be supplemented with project-specific training on the Autodesk Construction Cloud CDE software.

DID YOU KNOW?

ISO/SANS 19650 outlines the following Key CDE requirements:

• Unique, standard identification for every “information container” (including drawing, model, file, and other data)
• Naming convention standards are defined by each country adopting the standard
• Revision control, so that only specific revisions are available for use by the project team, ensuring that everyone is working from the correct information
• The ability to classify the data and to assign a specific “suitability status” to ensure that anyone accessing and using that data can be confident in the reliability, accuracy, and intended use
• Controlled information flow and approval processes to ensure that only approved information goes from WIP to Shared, to Published
• Audit trail
