About the BIM Matters Series

Welcome to the ‘BIM Matters’ Video Series featuring Jani Viljoen, Head of Professional Services and BIM Counsellor at Baker Baynes! Our aim with this series is to delve into critical aspects of BIM (Building Information Modelling/Building Information Management) that hold significance.

In the dynamic landscape of South Africa, marked by transitions and changes, particularly concerning ISO19650 compliance, team collaboration, and common data environments, there’s much to explore.

Designed to showcase the perspectives of BIM pioneers, this series seeks to leverage their profound insights and opinions to empower our audience. Our goal is to stimulate thoughtful discussions and enrich the practices of professionals in the Built Environment.

BIM Matters – Episode 1

In this inaugural episode, our BIM Counsellor and head of the Professional Services Development Team at Baker Baynes, Jani Viljoen, has gathered a stellar panel of judges from the ‘Extraordinary Women in BIM’ campaign. Together, they are set to unravel the core matters that truly shape the future of Building Information Modelling (BIM) and the built environment.

Joining us today are three trailblazers, each a powerhouse in their own right. Dr. Calayde Davey, a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Architecture, University of Pretoria, brings her dedication to industry-wide transformation and invaluable insights to our panel.

Next up is Anien Nauta, a highly accomplished Senior BIM Model Coordination Manager at AECOM. Anien’s expertise and passion for leveraging technology to streamline construction processes have placed her at the forefront of BIM adoption within projects.

BIM Matters – Episode 2

Join us as we chat with an array of distinguished experts who attended the BIM for Now and Future Workshop, including Louda van Der Merwe, Executive Manager of the Harding Institute for Architecture (GIFA); Abigail Lundu, ABSA’s Head of Physical Design; Yusuf Wadee, Manager at YIW Architecture; Alyssa Jairus, Designer at Standard Bank; Job Rakgomo from Allot Design; Mbali Mchunu, Associate Manager of Interior Design at TKDS; and Thembekile Mtsi. These professionals share their key takeaways from the workshop, designed to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application.

The workshop highlighted the rapid technological changes in the architectural and construction industry, emphasising the importance of adaptability and updated knowledge. The event provided actionable insights into current practices, the potential of new technologies, and the realistic implementation of standards within projects. Participants left equipped to implement immediate ‘now’ solutions like BIM execution plans, engage with clients to develop exchange information requirements in the mid-term, and develop a long-term vision for fully integrating comprehensive digital asset management and future-proof technologies.

Discover how BIM is revolutionising large projects, mitigating risks, and saving costs. Learn about the challenges of integrating BIM, the importance of continuous professional development, and the potential benefits of open information sharing. This episode highlights the future of BIM and its role in streamlining project workflows, enhancing collaboration, and fostering innovation in architecture.

And last but certainly not least, we have the ‘Tech-Savvy BIM Queen,’ Lilanie Lotter, former BIM Manager at Capex Projects. Lilanie’s inspiring journey from aspiring architect to a leader embracing technology as a driving force in her career exemplifies the transformative power of BIM.

In this unique platform, we transcend technical jargon, focusing on the real-world significance of BIM, ISO 19650, and Common Data Environments. The discussions aren’t just for industry professionals; they’re for anyone passionate about the evolution of our built landscape.

So, without further ado, let’s delve into the heart of the matters that truly matter around BIM. Jani and our esteemed judges will guide us through insightful conversations, providing practical experience, transformative insights, and the profound impact of technology on shaping roles within the industry.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Calayde Davey, Anien Nauta, and Lilanie Lotter for joining us in this discussion. Their voices are invaluable in shaping the future of BIM. Stay tuned for a conversation that goes beyond the surface and into the very essence of ‘BIM Matters.
