Celebrating Excellence: The Prize Handover to the 2024 Extraordinary Woman in BIM

One of the highlights of the evening was the official prize handover to Prinell Naicker, the 2024 Extraordinary Woman in BIM. Prinell was recognized for her exceptional leadership and commitment to digital transformation in the AECO industry. She has played a pivotal role in shaping BIM processes and refining workflows, making her a worthy recipient of this prestigious award.

Prinell’s ability to lead and mentor her team, foster collaboration, and embrace innovation has made her a standout figure in the industry. Her work in integrating authoring tools, quality assurance, and digital twin technologies has streamlined project delivery and boosted efficiency on multiple levels. Moreover, her dedication to upskilling others within the BIM community has created a culture of continuous learning and knowledge-sharing, ensuring that the next generation of AECO professionals are well-equipped to face future challenges.

During the prize handover, Prinell graciously accepted the award and shared her gratitude with the audience. She expressed her passion for BIM and her belief in its transformative potential for the AECO industry. Her inspiring speech emphasized the importance of leadership, collaboration, and continuous learning in today’s rapidly evolving world.

A View on Digital Maturity

The guests took part in a Digital Maturity Survey to assess their organisation’s position on the digital maturity spectrum. The insights gathered provided a clear understanding of where each organisation stands in its digital transformation journey and highlighted key areas – process, people, and technology – that require attention, improvement, optimisation, or leadership.

Digital Maturity: Most organisations in the dataset are classified under the “Developing Digital Capabilities” stage, meaning they have started to implement digital technologies but are not yet fully integrated or advanced. A few are further along, reaching the “Digitally Advanced” or “Digital Leaders” stages, suggesting that while some organizations are becoming leaders in digital transformation, the majority are still working on building their capabilities.

• Organisations that are at the Beginning of their Digital Journey expressed that the most common area where respondents feel behind is “People,” indicating that the challenge for many organisations lies in the human side of digital transformation, such as skill development or team alignment with digital strategies. This is a critical insight, as digital tools alone cannot drive transformation without the people who understand and utilize them effectively.

• Organisations that are Developing their Digital Capabilities have a strong emphasis on improving “Processes” and “Technology.” Several respondents indicated that these two areas hold the most room for growth. This suggests that many organisations are aware of inefficiencies or gaps in their current operations and are focusing on optimising workflows and better leveraging digital technologies.

• Organisations that are Digitally Advanced similarly when asked where the most optimisation can occur, “Processes” and “Technology” were again identified as key areas. This aligns with the broader focus on improving organisational efficiency and digital tool usage.

• Organisations that are Digital Leaders are beginning to see positive outcomes in technology implementation. While fewer respondents provided feedback on this point, the data suggests that those who have made strides in digital transformation are starting to realise benefits in technological areas.

• Organisations that are Digitally Proficient identified areas of leadership, “Technology” and “Processes” again feature prominently. This reinforces the idea that organisations leading in digital transformation are excelling in these areas and could serve as examples for others on how to optimise digital tools and processes effectively.

A Glimpse into the Future: Insights from the BIM for Now and Future Infographic Report

The evening also featured an insightful presentation from Jani Viljoen, Director and BIM Counsellor at Baker Baynes, who shared highlights from the company’s recently published BIM for Now and the Future Infographic Report. Jani’s presentation provided a comprehensive overview of the latest trends in BIM, offering valuable insights into the current state of BIM implementation across the AECO industry and a look ahead to future developments.

Jani explored how BIM is being used today to enhance project collaboration, improve data management, and reduce project risks. The report highlighted the growing adoption of BIM technologies and underscored the importance of common data environments in facilitating collaboration between project teams, architects, engineers, and contractors. Additionally, Jani touched on the role of sustainability in future projects and how BIM can help companies achieve their sustainability goals by optimizing resource use and improving project efficiency.

The report also sparked discussions on the potential challenges that the industry may face as it continues to integrate advanced technologies, such as AI, robotics, and digital twins. Attendees were encouraged to think about how they could leverage these innovations to stay ahead in a competitive market, improve project outcomes, and contribute to a more sustainable future.

The Evening in Retrospect: Building Connections and Driving Progress

As the evening came to a close, attendees left with a renewed sense of purpose and inspiration. The dinner had provided a valuable opportunity to exchange ideas, forge new partnerships, and gain deeper insights into the future of BIM and digital transformation. The conversations that began over dinner will undoubtedly continue to shape the direction of the AECO industry for years to come.

For Baker Baynes, this event was more than just a chance to host a dinner—it was an opportunity to bring together the brightest minds in the industry, foster collaboration, and drive progress in digital innovation. The focus on BIM, sustainability, and technology integration reflected the company’s commitment to staying at the forefront of industry advancements and helping others do the same.

The evening will be remembered not only for its exceptional hospitality and high-level networking but also for the profound impact it had on those in attendance.
